Playing Hard to get

Reggie is a guy who does not speak of his inner most feelings to another male, not even his own father. But 

he had to talk to someone. Chuck Clayton was chosen. He was the closest thing to a best friend that Reggie had. 

 Reggie was a loner, though he had tons of friends. He covered up his loneliness with supreme ‘jerk-ism.’

He definitely didn’t want anyone to pity him.

One day after they finished a heated game of one-on-one  basketball, Reggie had to get something off of his 

chest.

“Can I ask talk to you about something Chuck?”

“You don’t have to ask, Reg. What’s up?”

“ Uh, well, I ah, I don’t know..uh”

“ Say no more man. You have more than friendly feelings for Betty, right?”

“Shit,  is it that obvious?”

“Well, hell yeah, it is. Don’t sweat it, man. I have the same problem. We’ve both been acting like two

assholes, fighting everywhere we go because of those two girls.”

 Nancy was his girl. He didn’t care what anyone thought. Yes, he was turning into the jealous type. He was not 

letting anyone steal Nancy from him. He knew a jewel when he saw one. She was the best.

“I’m a dog and I know it. I’m not good enough for her.  Betty deserves a nice guy”

“Look Mantle, as much as you try to act rotten and being a wise ass, you have a good heart. You are the most

honest person I know.”

“You were always there for Betty when Archie was fucking with her head. She got over him because of you. I’m 

proud to call you my friend. Tell Betty how you feel, and she can decide. Uh Reg, this doesn’t mean we’re going

steady now, does it?”

That broke up the serious mood. They gave each other ‘noogies’.

“ Chuckster, I don’t know what to do with a nice girl. The girls I deal with are with me for sex. I don’t know how to

keep my baser needs in check around Betty. I’m afraid I won’t be able to control myself and do something ugh.. 

bad to her. You know, force myself on her. Is it wrong to go to others for sex, you know, relieve the tension and 

have a good girl bring home to your folks?”

“Reggie! What are you talking about? What guy will say no to some available trim? You do what you have to do to 

get the girl, if that’s  the girl you want to. You’ve been out with Betty thousands of times. You would never do

anything to her she didn’t want you to do. You’d better watch out she doesn’t rape you; remember how hot she’s

been looking. Good girls get horny too. You know how girls are when they get horny. They go wild. I feel Miss

Cooper is not as innocent as you think. I think you  really love her, man.” Chuck’s mind went off into some of

his greatest sexual moments with Nancy. She always called it ‘banana time.’

“I thought you were supposed to feel all warm and fuzzy when you’re in love”

“Gee Reg, who told you that? Some girl?  Love ain’t  always like that. It can raise you up, or drop you flat. And it

makes you hot, not warm. It’s for the fucking birds, but what can we do. Just go with it. Fighting it only makes it

worse. Like quicksand. Just let it take you where you gotta go. Tell her how you feel. ”

Reggie didn’t answer that. His ears was red, though.

 “Thanks Chuck. You’re a good friend. ” Chuck pounded him on his back.

They both headed over to Pop’s for sodas. Maybe their girls were there.
