Grounded

Chapter 2 : Grounded

Dick looked down at the red head in his arms. The same girl that made his heart jump every single time he saw her. From the first time he met Babs, he knew her face by heart. He knew each and every freckle, especially those across the bridge of her nose. And the hair…the long fiery hair that he had brushed his fingers through so many times.

He could almost feel her heart race. Maybe it was the adrenaline of the fall. Or maybe…just maybe she was finally feeling the same need for him that he felt for her. But he held her for a moment, realizing that she wasn’t struggling to find her footing. She was content to just be held in his arms. And he was more than happy to oblige.

“We ain’t done yet,” he said to her with a smile, adjusting his arms a bit to better support her weight. “I have yet to show the funhouse,” he grinned, leaning down a bit to be able to look her in the eyes. And then, completely out of character, he spoke words that caused his cheeks to flush in embarrassment.

“Unless there is another house you’d rather go to.”

Babs felt her jaw drop a bit at the words, and quickly replaced her look of surprise with a smile. “That almost sounds like an indecent proposition,” she said teasingly, only to find herself being lowered to her feet, forcing her to release her grip around his neck.

“Sorry Babs,” he said lowering his eyes to the floor. But Babs wasn’t. It was about time he broke out of the shell that he covered himself with. He was hardly the young teenage boy that she first met. He had grown into a man, and the most handsome one she had ever seen.

“No need to apologize Grayson,” she said lifting his chin so that her eyes could meet his. “I was waiting for you to…” But it was her time to blush. Her time to end the words before she said something that she would regret. But even as she stopped the words, she realized that regret was the last thing she was feeling.

“Listen Dick,” she said to him, wrapping her arms around him, trying to ease both of their embarrassment. “We’re not teenagers anymore,” she reminded him. “And maybe…well…I think you should take me home,” she said, chickening out at the last moment before telling him exactly what she really wanted.

They drove in almost silence, as Babs watched the circus fade away in the horizon. Much like she figured the night would fade away as another time that was stamped “what could have been.” But as Dick pulled in to the underground garage of the Clock tower, Babs knew that the night could go one way or another. Part of her just wanted to tell him the truth. That she had fantasized about him from the moment she first saw him. That she wanted him to be the first man in her bed. But her own pride and stubbornness was something that stood in the way of those words.

As the car came to a stop, Dick took her hand and brought it to his lips, kissing it gently. “I’m sorry Babs,” he said, the soft, hot breath on her hand forcing her to turn in his direction. “Dick,” she said. “I want you to come upstairs,” she admitted.

Dick simply nodded, and released her hand, jumping out of the car and opening her door for her, helping her out with a chivalrous hand. Soon they made their way upstairs, the elevator silent and awkward.
