The Funny Thing About Fur...

Chapter Two – The Funny Thing About Fur

“Why’re you looking so goofy today, Carrot-Top?”

“I don’t know what ye mean,” Rahne sniffed.

“You keep staring over there and making this silly little moon-face; there it is again! My folks had a calf that used to make that face when he was a juvenile buck, and the mares were in heat!”

“I’m doing no such thing, Danielle Moonstar!”

“Y’are too!”

“Am not!”

“What are you staring at?” Dani’s eyes flitted to where Rahne had been gazing a few moments ago, but Rahne looked down at her feet to deter her. She wasn’t fast enough. Dani’s gaze flicked over to the boys walking out through the patio doors, laden down with utensils and plates. Roberto was talking a mile a minute, and Sam’s face was hidden beneath the stack of kitchen supplies and covered bowls that filled his lanky arms. That only left…

“Aha!”

“Hush, Dani!”

“Hmmm…I wonder what Rahne was staring at so hard that she didn’t notice she was making calf eyes? What could it be…or WHO!” Dani pounced, reaching out to tickle Rahne heartily in the ribs.

“QUIT IT!”

“Can’t say that I blame you, Rahney,” Dani purred teasingly. “He’s awfully cute!”

“SHUSH!”

“I’m not the one shouting,” she hummed under her breath. Rahne’s eyes were the size of half-dollars, shooting green fire and promising dire outcomes. She wasn’t the only one who noticed the volume of her tone; Doug looked up from the pitcher of tea that he was stirring sweetener into and waved at Rahne, his trademark lopsided grin in place. Rahne’s heart melted as she halfheartedly returned the wave, then ducked her face beneath her hand.

“Och! M’such a baby, such a baby, such a baby…” she chanted like a mantra the entire way back inside the kitchen.

“Geez, she’s got it bad,” Dani muttered.

Elsewhere:

“Thou wilt experience some discomfort, mayhap, wolfling. It shouldst not last over long,” Amora promised, quite emptily. She swung the bolo-shaped talisman in a wild arc, creating a glowing portal that emanated eldritch lightning. Hrimhari gasped, afraid to venture forward. Loki remedied the delay by giving him a hearty shove.

“Best of luck on your journey, young prince!”

Hrimhari couldn’t remember when he began screaming…the light engulfed him, burning through every nerve ending. Belatedly, the thought occurred to him: How would he know where to find Rahne?

Back at Westchester:

“Dang, this is some tasty potato salad!” Sam ladled a hefty clump onto his plate. Rahne stared into her plate, anything not to look into…oh dear. She did it again. Doug’s smiling blue eyes caught hers, and she felt the familiar creep of heat into her cheeks again.

“Who made it?” Roberto asked, squirting a health stream of mustard onto his hot dog.

“Why, young Rahne here made it with her own two hands.”

“Och! I mean, yes, I made it. Two hands. Two,” she hedged. “Mine. Made it. The salad.” Rahne reached for her glass of sun tea to keep her lips too busy to say anything else that resembled babbling.

“You did a nice job of it, Rahney,” Doug beamed, forking into it with renewed enthusiasm.

“Err, thanks, erm, Dougie.” Maybe if he wasn’t so handsome…nay. Doug was Doug. It wasn’t just his sunny, boyish good looks. It was that cute little lopsided grin. Or that funny little way that he ran his hand through his hair when he was translating texts or troubleshooting a computer program with Roberto. And the way he pronounced her name without error the first moment they met.

Douglas Ramsey…was Prince Charming. In a nutshell. And right now, looking at him, watching her from across the table, was making her insides do that funny little dance that usually meant…

“Bathroom,” she huffed. “Excuse me. I have tae use the rest room.” Inwardly she kicked herself.

I could nae just say “Excuse me?” Errrgggghhh…

And so she fled. Dani sighed as she served herself some of the potato salad, which actually was quite good. Shan entered the patio from the kitchen, peering over her shoulder at Rahne’s retreating back. “Where was Rahne headed in such a rush?”

“Little girl’s room,” Roberto quipped dryly. Dani shot him a look of disgust. Boy didn’t have a clue.

Suddenly her telepathic link with Rahne opened up, so sharply that she nearly choked on her hamburger. She dropped it back onto her plate as images of the woods behind the house filled her vision.

“You’ve got that look on your face again,” Shan intoned blandly. “This is good potato salad.”

“Rahney made it with her own two hands,” Doug boasted.

Several minutes passed as the students sampled the various goodies and complimented the chef. Magnus beamed as he flipped burgers and turned chicken breasts on the sizzling grill.

“Dani?” Shan whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Is Rahne coming back to the table?”

“Not right now, no.” Dani could feel Rahne’s heart racing at its quickened lupine pace as she sped over to the lake. She felt a twinge of shame in her part of Rahne’s embarrassment, particularly when she picked up the stray thread of her thoughts.

I just want him to like me…
