A Bad Commission
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: A BAD COMMISSION
JET was still seething at Batman's stupid show of defiance as she stormed into Commissioner Gordon's office. After leaving the Caped Crusader bleeding on the bed she'd made sure the light was turned off again so he could sit alone in the darkness considering his latest battering at her hands.
She'd changed into a pair of tight black tracksuit trousers and a clinging red top. She was in no mood to let the police chief have the satisfaction of feasting his eyes on her voluptuous body this afternoon.
The Commissioner was reading through a sheaf of papers on his desk as she stalked into the room. Her anger rose as he studiedly failed to look up or even acknowledge her presence. Jet placed her hands on the edge of his desk and leaned forward a thin, false smile on her beautiful face.
"Busy Commissioner?" she said sarcastically.
He looked up and smiled back.
"Ah Jet," he said as though he'd only just noticed her. "What can I do for you?"
"We had an appointment, remember?" she replied irritatedly settling herself into the seat opposite. "I wanted to make sure you were on top of all my requirements for the big day. I would so hate you to mess anything up Commissioner. Robin and I would find that very distressing as I'm sure you can imagine."
Jet leant back and lifted her legs placing her training-shoe clad feet on the edge of the desk.
"Now, are all the arrangements in place? Can I be satisfied you're up to the job?"
The Commissioner picked up a file from the side of his desk and flicked it open. In silence he scanned through the pages one by one while Jet sat inwardly fuming at his apparent nonchalance. If he hadn't been who he was she would have happily smashed his sorry body to a pulp. But she knew assaulting the Police Commissioner in his own office was hardly something she'd be able to get away.
"Yes, yes," he said at last as Jet's eyes bored into him. "Everything seems fine. Except, I'm afraid, for one thing."
"Really?" replied Jet impatiently. "What would that be?"
"I'm unable to provide the police escort you asked for. As I explained before they're reserved for special circumstances."
Jet lifted her legs off the desk and leaned forward.
"And as I explained Commissioner, these are very special circumstances," she said smiling grimly. "So you be a good boy and just do as you're told."
The Commissioner's expression remained completely impassive as Jet kept her eyes fixed threateningly on his.
"It's not possible," he said calmly. "Just not possible. The occasion has to warrant such a use of police manpower. We do have criminals to catch you know."
Jet closed her eyes trying to control her temper. First Batman and now this weak, pathetic, stupid man was refusing to do as she said. Another one who would have to be taught a very painful lesson sometime in the future.
She breathed in deeply, fixed her gaze back on the Commissioner and said very slowly: "Are you trying to tell me my engagement to Robin does not constitute an occasion to warrant the deployment of a police escort? The day the famed crimefighter publicly pledges his eternal devotion to Jet. His total unswavering loyalty.
"He wants me to have my escort Commissioner - and more importantly so do I."
Jet leaned back in her chair again satisfied she had made her point to the useless wretch. The Commissioner's face didn't flicker. Jet's obvious annoyance was clear and he felt a certain satisfaction in having riled the arrogant former jailbird to such a degree.
"Yes, indeed," he replied. "Robin is certainly a very well-respected and important person in the city. But in rank he defers to Batman and that is who the police department would deal through. Now if the request were to come from Batman himself it would probably be a different matter.
"But there has been no such request. I take it he approves of the partnership does he? I would hate to be making all these arrangements if, in fact, Batman had not sanctioned his partner's impending engagement."
Jet almost burst from the seat onto her feet as he finished speaking. Her knuckles went white as she gripped the edge of his desk and her bosom heaved beneath her tight red top. The Commissioner could feel her breath on his face as she leaned forward her eyes flashing pure hatred.
"Batman is in no position to sanction anything," she hissed. "Robin is mine. I decide what he does or doesn't do. Is that clear Commissioner? Batman has no say in the matter.
"Nor does he have a say in your provision of a police escort for me. You and your men should be thankful I'm granting you the privilege. I advise you to get that through your stupid, ugly head.
"Now you be a good boy and arrange it for me. You'll find it's for the best. Because if you let me down again I won't be so understanding."
Without waiting for a reply Jet stamped out of the room her face a mask of anger. Behind her Commissioner Gordon sat nodding knowingly to himself.
