Wager of the Goddesses
Wager
And lo, there came a time when even the Divine Ladies grew weary of their duties. While they did love and cherish their mortal worshipers, upon the Goddesses did fall a tedium. The passing of seasons with their rites and rituals had become an endless chore, and the Goddesses did sulk and linger by the shores of lake Zob-Noora.
There each complained that her duties were the most burdensome, and would trade anything for but one year's respite. All but Jinx, whose hungers know no end, but Jinx did commiserate anyway for she was a tricky Goddess with a love for causing mischief, and Jinx had struck upon a plan.
"The solution is simple," Jinx spoke, "Each goddess shall take on the duties of her sister, and in so shall our chores seem new and exciting again."
This brought the others to peals of laughter. "None could handle my task so well as I." each Goddess said in turn, "To pass my duties to another is to invite chaos and disaster. My role is not so easy as all of yours."
"If that is true, then I propose a wager." Jinx tempted the others, "Whichever Goddesses should fail in completing their new task must become the slaves of those who succeed, until the next time their holy day arrives."
Though the others were mistrusting of Jinx they were also excited at the thought of something new. And the chance to enslave the others to their will for an entire year was too great a temptation, though they risked being bound in slavery themselves. And so the Divine Ladies drew lots for who should preside over her fellow Goddess' holy ritual. The rest of the afternoon was passed with laughter and excited boasting as the Goddesses washed their markings off in the waters of the lake. As night fell the Goddesses adorned each other in one another's traditional markings, and then fell to playful copulation as these gatherings often did.
In the morning the Goddesses parted ways, to await the coming of the first holiday and with it the first trial.
