The Joke's On Batman

Chapter 1

Toyland

---------------

The demented maze of broken toys was too tall to get over, too unstable to move or climb, and too concealing to allow Batman to stay still. He had to move through it, he had to find The Joker, and he had to put a stop to this madness.

Over the deteriorating loudspeaker, The Joker's questionable singing voice blared. "Toyland, Toyland, good little girl and boy laaaaand...hehe!"

Batman ground his teeth.

"Oh, dear, I've forgotten the rest of the song. I guess you'll just have to hear the impromtu version, Batman! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The piles of broken dolls and teddy bears with missing limbs were disturbed by a pair of The Joker's henchmen, garbed in bright colors, faces covered by grease paint.

He fought with them, and won, burying them in an avalanche of defective action figures and jack-in-the-boxes that couldn't shut their lids.

"Come out, Joker! I'll find you eventually!"

The Joker sang. "We'll all live here forever, cause it's happy girl and boy laaand! Toyland, Toyland, good little girl and boy land. Where every day is Christmas, cause it's candy every day land...
Toyland, Toyland, it's come here and enjoy land. Everyone is happy, and it's good little girl and boy land!"

The Joker wasn't really trying to stop him, Batman realized. He ran through the poorly lit warehouse turned turned into the fevered dream of a madman, trying to find The Clown Prince before it was too late. He expected the worst- a bomb, or an explosion, that sent the maze tumbling down on him. There could be no real escape from that. Part of him wanted to leave, but Batman, the soul of his identity, wouldn't let him leave without The Joker.

The maze ended in the very back of the warehouse. There was nothing there except for a small room with a large window - empty - and a door with red draperies hanging across it.

Batman tore the draperies away, growling.

The Joker cowered, clutching the mic in one hand and looking mock scared. "Eee! Don't look at the man behind the curtain, Batman! So rude! I'll have to get you for that."

He straightened, grinning.

Batman punched in him the face, knocking him back into the room. The Joker hit the wall, hard, and fell.

He stalked over and grabbed The Joker by his shirt collar, yanking him up back to eye level. "What's your game, Joker? Why did you lure me here?"

The Joker batted his eyelashes. "Why, to feel the warm embrace of your strong arms, Batman. I love a man in tights. HAHAHA!"

Batman jerked back when The Joker laughed in his face. Before he could be shot or gassed, he searched The Joker's body and ripped his arsenal off of him, tossing it behind them on the floor. "No games."

"Oh contraire." The Joker giggled. "It's all games."
