Out of Time
Chapter One
"Uncle Jim!" Kali Moore ran up to her uncle, arms spread wide. She hadn't seen her Uncle in over six years, since he was appointed Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department.
"Kali! How's my favorite niece?" He wrapped his only niece in his arms tightly, kissing her on the top of her head. "Look at you! 17 and beautiful!" He smiled at Kali. Seeing how much she had grown in six years reminded her how much he really had missed her. "How's California treating you?"
She smiled at him, walking into his office inside the Police Station with him. "It's different. Definitely not Gotham, but I like it." Her smile dimmed slightly. "It's kinda weird being an orphan now. Ever since dad died in that car accident, everyone has been treating me differently." She shrugged her shoulders as her uncle continued to see how much she had changed.
Kali was no longer the little 11 year-old girl he watched move to California with her father after her mother, Jim's sister, died. She was now very tan, like most Southern California girls, with dirty-blond, curly hair. She was beautiful, just like her mother. Her sparkling blue eyes seemed to glow brighter with her perfect smile.
"It's like how everyone treated me here when mom died, but worse, because now I have no parents." Kali laughed lightly, trying to lighten the awkward feeling between them. "So, what's it like being Commissioner? Exciting I bet."
Jim understood her desire to change subjects, not wanting to dwell too much on the death of her parents, so he followed the direction she was heading. "It's definitely different. Being at the top is a place I'm proud..." The Commissioner was interrupted as someone came bursting through the door.
"Commissioner Gordon, it's the Riddler. He's escaped from Arkham." It was Lieutenant Hardings, a young, hard-working cop who was always on top of things. Jim could tell it was serious from the tone of his voice, simply nodding to dismiss him.
The Commissioner turned to his niece, placing his hands on her shoulders. "Kali, I'm really sorry, but I've got to run. We've been having problems with inmates of Arkham Asylum getting out. I've got to take care of this." He handed her a spare key to his house he had made for her. "Here, take this. Ask Jason...err...Lieutenant Hardings for directions to my house. Make yourself comfortable. I'll give you a call when I'm on my way home." He gave her a quick hug, then ran out the door, heading to the roof.
Kali placed the key in her back pocket, heading into the office where Lieutenant Hardings was sitting at his desk, organizing some paper work that was to be submitted to the DA later. "Lieutenant Hardings?" The young man looked up from his paper work, captivated by the young woman's beauty. "Hi, I'm Kali. Uncle Ji...err..Commissioner Gordon told me to ask for directions to his house, said he gave them to you."
The young police officer nodded his head, grabbing the piece of paper that the Commissioner had written the directions on. "I'll call a cab for you." He handed her the directions as he reached for the phone.
Kali took the directions, shaking her head. "No, thank you though. I'd really rather walk. I've been on a plane all day and I'm tired of sitting." She smiled, waved goodbye and walked outside. She wrapped her scarf around her neck, put her beanie back on and wrapped her arms around her tightly. Her bags had already been delivered to her uncle's home and all she had with her was a satchel. "Down 41st street...." She made her way down the road, following the directions to the letter. "Take a left on Grier Avenue..." She had been following the directions so closely, she didn't notice the sound of light footsteps crunching in the snow behind her, following her home.

"Problem at Arkham?" Batman sat in the shadows, perched on a ledge. His cape wrapped around his body mysteriously, obeying the will of the soft breeze that was blowing across the rooftop.
Commissioner Gordon nodded, blowing his warm breath into his hands, trying to keep them from getting too cold. "The Riddler. I swear, these damn inmates of Arkham like to escape at the worst times. I've got to deal with the Riddler, this serial rapist, calling himself the Fox, and on top of all this, my niece is here. I haven't seen her in six years and it looks like I won't be able to spend much time with her either." He looked out over the streets of Gotham. "What about you Batman?....Batman?" The Commissioner looked around, realizing he was alone. "Of course he's gone. What was I thinking?" He walked back inside the building, heading to his office to start some paper work.

Kali let out a grunt as she was shoved against a brick wall in the alley she had been dragged into. She kicked her legs and flailed her arms, trying to get her attacker away from her. "Get away from me!" She took her bag, hitting him over the head with it, stunning him long enough for her to get away, if only for a moment.
"SOMEBODY HELP M..." She felt hands envelop her from behind, covering her mouth and constricting her arms. She felt her scarf fall from her body, seeing the house key on the ground.
"Bitch, you're gunna wish you came quietly." The man tightened his grip of Kali's mouth, only to feel her teeth sink into his finger, causing him to let go of his mouth.
Kali took that moment to spit his blood out on her fallen scarf, as well her own saliva, leaving some sort of clue behind.
The man turned Kali around, slamming her against the brick wall. "Welcome to my domain. You should have listened and came quietly. Now, your life from here on out is going to be a living hell." He brought his fist into her temple, just hard enough to render her unconscious.
The man slung her over his shoulder, carrying her to his car where he placed her in the trunk. He looked around, making sure no one had seen them, grabbed her bag and drove off into the snowy winter night.
