Guilty
I feel guilty
my words are empty
no signs to give you
i don't have the time for you
Dr. Manhattan knew the fight was coming, that Laurie would leave him in less than a week, but he did nothing. He knew it would eventually come to this, just like it had with Janey. He finds He is relieved rather than distressed by this, but simple emotions never hold much curiosity for him anymore.
you say i'm heartless
and you say i don't care
i used to be there for you
and you've said i seem so dead, that i have changed
but so have you
Dr. Manhattan knows she will tell him she hates him, though she doesn't mean it and she will go to Daniel. She will tell Daniel she loves him though she will never mean it the way Daniel does.
guilty, guilty i feel so
empty, empty you know how to make me feel
After that he can see almost nothing, except a meeting between him, Veidt, Daniel, Laurie and Rorschach. It takes place in Antarctica, but the details are fuzzy and he can't hear what is being said. Everyone is angry, except him and Veidt. He is sad and Veidt is... Relieved? Peaceful? Something along those lines.
And then only one other thing. He kills Rorschach, in the cold, cold snow, taking him apart molecule by molecule. He doesn't know why he does this, only that it is vital that it be done.
i put a shield upon you
i didn't mean to hurt you
i would have only poisoned your mind
never meant to make you cry
He tries not to show Laurie how much he knows. It frightens her to see him as something so very other. He wants her to go away from him with at least a few pleasant memories, ones not overshadowed by some freakish nightmare of his own making. But he realizes it is useless, the very fight is caused by his utter alien-ness. The way he can no longer seem to connect on a human level.
you've been so thoughtless
i can see right through you
you used to be there for me
so don't you leave say goodbye
cause you have changed but so have i
She drifted away from him long before they broke up. He didn't know how or when she started to resent his work. He knew she never noticed. She was too in love with the life she thought they had to notice anything was wrong with it. But with each kiss, each touch she responded to him less and less until he didn't know her anymore.
i never thought that the time and the distance
between us made you so much colder
i'll carry the world on my shoulders
And today she had been scared by his attempts to love her only to become angry that a tiny portion of his mind was not completely focused on her. She had screamed at him that she hated him. He knew it was a lie.
He watched her from his room as she went to Daniel and when she kissed him, Dr. Manhattan smiled a sad smile and teleported to the television studio.
She was in good hands. His conscience was clear.
