CHAPTER SEVEN: PAPER TRAIL
BATMAN BEATEN
BY CRIME GANG
FALL OF
A HERO!
CAPE OF
NO HOPE
Batman scanned the headlines in silence hardly reading the coruscating words written beneath describing his latest defeat.
He turned to the final one and winced as he saw the picture of himself lying unconscious with his cape spread under him.
Over the photograph was printed just one word in big, bold capitals: USELESS.
Batman flicked over the page in disgust to be confronted by the grinning face of Electra.
EXCLUSIVE: Gotham's Number One woman on why Batman has failed us all!
The Caped Crusader really didn't want to read it - but he couldn't help himself.
"When I first came to Gotham , it started. "I was always reassured to know that Batman was out there protecting the ordinary citizen and keeping our streets safe for us to go about our everyday business.
"I no longer feel that way. In fact, I feel inordinately less safe day by day. Why Batman still appears to generate so much admiration is beyond me.
"Not only has he conspiculously failed to catch the criminals daily perpetrating their increasingly daily crimes he is now actively being humiliated by them.
"How else to describe the sight of him unconscious on a sidewalk while millions of pounds worth of jewels are spirited away?"
The article carried on in a similar vein for 1,200 words - a sneering, insult-riddled dismissal of the Caped Crusader and all his best efforts.
Its final paragraph was a carefully constructed double-entendre aimed straight at the Dark Knight himself.
"In my eyes Batman is now too old, too addled, too blind to make the right choices.
"Perhaps it is time he stepped aside for someone younger, more handsome and undoubtedly more able.
"Step forward Robin - who I know from experience is more than capable of rising to the occasion."
Batman flung the newspaper down in disgust a furious expression on his face.
He realised that since their first meeting Electra had been running rings around him with almost embarrassing ease.
First her flirtation with him, then the ambush in the alley followed by her attempted seduction of Robin. And now a humiliating beating laid bare in all its shameful details by the press. If he hadn't known before he knew now that she was determined to punish hinm for having rejected her advances.
It was time, he decided, to fight fire with fire. Much as he loathed laying so much as a finger on a woman he was left with no choice.
Electra just had to be stopped at all costs - before she achieved what seemed to be her goal of completely destroying Batman himself.
